Symterra Pulse VFU

Elevated EMF Bird Deterrent System for Large Soaring Birds

Symterra Pulse VFU uses proprietary electromagnetic field (EMF) technology designed to discourage large soaring birds from landing on protected structures. Its elevated emitter-line configuration creates an invisible exclusion zone that encourages birds to move toward alternative locations, supporting long-term bird management at facilities experiencing recurring activity from species such as turkey vultures, buzzards, and storks.

Birds depend on the Earth’s magnetic field as a built-in compass, using it to orient themselves and find their way. Symterra Pulse VFU generates a controlled electromagnetic field within its coverage area using proprietary technology. When birds enter this zone, the field is engineered to disrupt their internal sense of direction, prompting them to seek out a different spot to land or settle rather than staying put.

The VFU is designed for infrastructure applications where large birds gather on elevated structures. Potential installation sites include communication towers, utility structures, industrial facilities, and other properties where large-bird activity may interfere with operations or increase maintenance requirements.

Unlike the low-profile supports used with the Pulse CFU, the Pulse VFU uses elevated tower rods to position the emitter line above the installation surface. This configuration helps establish the exclusion zone at a height suited to larger birds approaching elevated structures. The modular system can be configured around different layouts, with tower-based installations supporting up to 450 linear feet of emitter line per system.

Once installed, Symterra Pulse VFU operates continuously while connected to power and requires quarterly preventive maintenance, including visual inspections and verification of securely fastened wiring. Its contact-free approach supports bird pressure reduction without relying on a physical contact deterrent.
